Rising Self-Reported Cognitive Challenges Among Young U.S. Adults Spur New Research Urgency

Cognitive struggles related to memory and clear thinking have emerged as one of the most pressing top health concerns reported by adults in the United States, according to Adam de Havenon, associate professor of neurology at the Yale School of Medicine.

A 2025 Yale University study led by de Havenon uncovered an alarming sharp rise in self-reported cognitive disability, with the most dramatic growth occurring among adults aged 18 to 34. Over a 10-year period, the share of young adults reporting these issues nearly doubled, jumping from 5.1% in 2013 to 9.7% in 2023. This surge among younger age groups drove the vast majority of the overall national increase in cognitive disability reports. By comparison, the overall rate across all adult age groups grew far more modestly over the same decade, rising only from 5.3% to 7.4%. The study tracked health data from 4.5 million adults across the 10-year research window.

Does this signal a youth dementia epidemic?

While the study’s findings are undeniably a cause for concern, they do not confirm that an epidemic of youth-onset dementia is emerging. “This is not a formal diagnosis of dementia, or even of clinical cognitive impairment,” de Havenon explained. “What we have is self-reported data from people who say they face serious difficulty with concentration, memory, or decision-making. For a dementia diagnosis, there must be underlying structural brain disease and specific pathology that damages the brain and causes persistent cognitive impairment.”

Even so, the Yale research team notes that these results require urgent further investigation, as growing rates of cognitive challenges across the population could create major future burdens for both healthcare systems and workplaces. Because study participants did not undergo diagnostic brain scans, researchers cannot yet confirm whether these self-reported issues are linked to the structural brain changes characteristic of dementia. Additional research is needed to establish whether a connection exists between early self-reported cognitive decline and the dementia-related brain changes.

If such a connection is confirmed, it would carry enormous global economic costs: a study published in Frontiers in Neurology records that dementia already cost the global economy $1.3 trillion in 2019. This reality is what makes ongoing research into dementia treatments—ranging from behavioral interventions to experimental anti-inflammatory nasal sprays—so critical today.

The Yale study also identified a clear connection between cognitive struggles and socioeconomic factors among participants. This finding confirms that cognitive challenges are growing more widespread across the population, especially among younger adults, and that broader social and structural systemic factors likely play a key role in driving this trend.
