Threads Launches Meta AI Integration for In-Conversation Real-Time Context, Sparking User Backlash

Meta’s text-based social platform Threads is rolling out a new Meta AI feature that delivers real-time contextual information any time the AI bot is mentioned in a post or reply.

Connor Hayes, head of Threads, shared the product vision behind the new tool in an announcement post to the app this Tuesday:

“We’re starting to test a way to get context on a Threads conversation by mentioning Meta AI in a post or reply. This will start in a handful of countries today and expand over time. Conversations here move fast. A lot of people want to look things up before jumping in. We want to make that easier. Ask Meta AI to get real-time context about a trend, breaking story, or get recommendations right in the conversation.”

The official Meta AI Threads account encourages users to tag @meta.ai to get context, closure, or comedy, and has published a demo video walking through how the feature works across any conversation on the platform.

The testing phase for mentions of Meta AI is currently limited to five countries: Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. Meta has plans to roll out the feature to more global markets soon, but the company did not respond to Fast Company’s request for additional comment on the launch.

Hayes’ announcement of the new AI feature quickly drew backlash from Threads users, with many community members voicing frustration over the upcoming platform change. A user-submitted community note is attached directly to Meta AI’s first public post on the app, warning other users that Meta AI has been rated as “extremely harmful, including [for generating] inaccurate information.”

One Threads user shared a screenshot of the community note to their feed, commenting: “Holy community note lol.”
