Instagram Launches Long-Awaited Grid Reordering Feature, Giving Users Full Control Over Profile Layouts

Starting Monday, June 8, Instagram users will be able to fully customize the order of photos and videos on their profile grids, arranging content however they see fit.

Prior to this update, all Instagram posts were displayed exclusively in reverse chronological order, with the most recent content appearing first. The only way for users to highlight specific content to visitors was through the existing pinning tool, which allowed up to three posts to be locked to the very top of the grid, while all other content still sorted by post date below.

The new functionality removes that restriction entirely: users can now click and drag any post to reposition it anywhere on their grid, even content that was shared as far back as a decade ago. This gives creators and casual users far more control over the first impression their profile makes, letting them curate their grid to match their current aesthetic, brand, or messaging instead of being stuck with a date-based layout.

Meta Platforms, Instagram’s parent company which also owns Facebook, WhatsApp, and Threads, confirmed the new feature to Fast Company, noting that customizable profile grids have been one of the most consistently and frequently requested features from the platform’s user base. Meta said it deliberately took a thoughtful, intentional approach to rolling out the tool rather than rushing it to market.

“We know this is long overdue, but we wanted to take the time to get it right,” Meta stated. The upcoming change was first reported earlier by USA Today.

Officially dubbed “Grid Reordering” by Instagram, the tool is built to be intuitive and easy to use for all account holders. To rearrange your grid, simply tap an existing post to pull up its editing menu. The menu already includes options to view post insights, share content, or pin a post to your profile, and as of June 8, it adds the new “reorder grid” option. Once you select the new feature, you can drag any post to your desired location on the profile grid.

Pinned posts will remain unaffected by this change, and will continue to stay locked to the top of user profiles just as they did before the rollout of Grid Reordering.
