Much like the bulk of content that populates Facebook these days, the "California Life" Facebook community page is overflowing with low-effort AI slop. Its feed is littered with AI-generated oddities: from images of highway patrol officers holding a groundhog, to lengthy custom road signs that highlight quirky, one-of-a-kind California traits. Buried between these random filler posts, however, are a string of pieces speaking out fiercely against AI data centers.
"It’s not worth giving up an inch of this for a data center," reads one post, with the phrase designed to look hand-carved into a sprawling crop field. Just 24 hours later, a second post shared an even firmer version of the message: "Not a single square inch of California is worth giving up for an AI Data Center." This time, the text floats over an AI-generated scenic shot of the California coastline, with the state flag positioned front and center in the frame. A third post features the exact same slogan, rendered to look scrawled into California beach sand, with a crowd of AI-generated protesters holding picket signs, one reading "Clean Air Not Sever Air."
This anti-data center AI content is not limited to California-focused junk pages, either. Near-identical posts — many sharing identical wording and visually similar AI-generated backdrops — have popped up on local interest pages for multiple other U.S. states. Even the specific "slogan carved into a crop field" format that debuted on the California page has already been spotted on local pages for South Dakota and Utah, and observers suspect the same template is circulating on many more unrecorded state pages across the country.
